Mental As Anything founding member and songwriter Andrew “Greedy” Smith died in his car after having suffered a heart attack. He was 63 years of age.
The band confirmed the death of Smith “with an incredibly heavy heart” on its Facebook page.”Our grief and confusion at this time are little compared to what Andrew’s family will be feeling,” they added.
Smith moved to a new home with his fiancee Fiona Docker after he fell ill, according to Australian media.
The scene was attended by an ambulance, but attempts to revive it failed.
The singer, songwriter and keyboardist was on a tour with Mental As Anything at the moment and was the last original member with the band still performing.
They were one of Australia’s most popular bands in the 1980s, affectionately known as “The Mentals,” scoring hits with songs such as Too Many Times ,If You Leave Me, Can I Come Too? And the Nips get bigger.
After their song Live It Up appeared in Crocodile Dundee’s soundtrack, they scored a UK hit in 1987.
Formed in 1978 as a band covered by a party, Smith always maintained that their success was a fluke.
“We didn’t have any ambition at all!” he said in 2014 to NQ Music Press. “It was the idea of someone else to record us, they started an independent record company, they needed someone to record and they picked us up, and it was luck and everyone who likes The Nips Are Getting Bigger started it all off.
“So we said, ‘ This is easy! We were not even trying!’”
The band was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009 of the Australian Recording Industry Association. Last month, the Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame was added to Smith.
On Australian shows like Hey Hey It’s Saturday and Tonight Live, the gregarious, articulate frontman was a well-loved TV personality.
He played his last show on Saturday night with Mental As Anything and was scheduled to perform on Thursday in Melbourne.
One of the founding members of the band, Reg Mombassa, said the group was shocked by the sudden death of their friend.
“We are all totally shocked. He seemed like such a healthy, energetic guy,” Reg Mombassa said.
He added, “He wasn’t the kind of guy who partied too hard. He enjoyed a drink when we were younger but he was a very serious performer.”
