The distinctive voice and enthusiastic delivery of Bellamy made him a household name and a television regular.
David Bellamy, naturalist and presenter, died at the age of 86.
David Shreeve, director of the Conservation Foundation, said he died on Wednesday morning.
He added: “David and I worked together on a variety of projects in various places since launching The Conservation Foundation in 1982,” said Mr Shreeve. “He was a larger-than-life character who became a very special friend and teacher.” “He inspired a whole generation with his wide range of interests and enthusiasm which knew no bounds.” “The Conservation Foundation was very special to him and so today is very sad for all of us.”
Bellamy was a household name as a TV personality, scientist and conservationist, with millions recognizable by his distinctive voice and delivery.
He inspired the catchphrase “grapple me grapenuts” by Sir Lenny Henry and was a regular television presence particularly in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.
Actor David Morrissey said that: “Sad to hear the news about David Bellamy.A real character and a man who cared about nature and our environment deeply.”
Former soccer player Stan Collymore called him an “childhood icon.”
Before meeting his wife Rosemary, with whom he had five children, Bellamy was working in a factory and as a plumber.
His interest in the natural world started after graduating from Durham University in the 1960s with a degree in botany.
His television life began in 1967 after his work on the oil spill of Torrey Canyon, off the southwest of England.
Bellamy’s shows featured Bellamy On Botany, Britain from Bellamy, Europe from Bellamy and Safari from Bellamy’s backyard.
In 1979, he received the Richard Dimbleby Award from Bafta.
