After Friends star Ron Leibman’s death, tributes were paid to an “incredibly talented” actor and a “champion.”
Ron Leibman, an award-winning comedian, a stage and screen star perhaps famous for playing Rachel Green’s father in Friends, died at the age of 82.
In 1979, the actor won an Emmy for his role in the Kaz drama and in 1993 a Tony for his portrayal of Roy Cohn in the play Angels In America: Millennium Approaches, in an entertainment career spanning six decades.
He has also previously appeared in films like Where’s Poppa? (1970), Slaughterhouse-Five (1972) and Norma Rae (1979), and more recently in series such as The Sopranos, Murder, She Wrote and Law & Order.
The Abrams Artists Agency announced on social media the news of his death, paying tribute to “an incredibly talented actor with a distinguished career in film, television and theatre.”
Born in 1937 in New York, Leibman started his television career as Johnny in The Edge Of The Night in 1956 and worked on Broadway in the 1960s, the agency said.
However his role as Dr. Leonard Green of Friends, the terrifying on-screen dad of Jennifer Aniston who tormented Rachel’s on – off boyfriend Ross Geller, is how best to remember him.
In an interview with the AV Club during 2011, Leibman admitted that before he was asked about the role, he had never watched the show and nearly turned it down.
He said, “It sounded stupid to me, so I turned it down,”. “And my daughter, then, who was of that age, said, ‘No, you have to do it, you have to do it! I love that show, and I want to meet those kids.’
“She had to meet those kids. I stated, ‘All right. I’ll do it. I’ll do it once, but that’s all I’m doing.’
“That’s what I did, and they had a very nice time, and they asked me back, and my daughter did get to meet those kids, so I was a big hero at home.”
He also acknowledged that it was the role he would always be known for, given his extensive CV.
