George Square is in the center of the city of Glasgow
According to the European Commission, Glasgow is the UK’s cultural and creative capital. The most populated city in Scotland took first place in the 2019 report of the Cultural and Creative Cities Monitor.
The EU executive arm report rates 190 cities in 30 European countries on their “cultural vibrancy,” “creative economy,” and ability to attract creative talent and promote cultural interaction.
London, Bristol, Brighton and Manchester round out the rest of the top five, with Edinburgh in sixth place. Dundee was the next Scottish city to be ranked 12th. And according to report, Glasgow is top for “openness, tolerance and trust,” and “cultural involvement and attractiveness.” For cultural attractions and facilities, Edinburgh is named the best UK city.
The report claims: [“Glasgow was one of the first European capitals of culture, in 1990. Known as an industrial city, it has now gained recognition as a creative and cultural centre of European importance.”]
Bridget McConnell, chairman of Glasgow Life, which provides Glasgow City Council with cultural and sporting events, said: “We always knew Glasgow was a global cultural leader and we are delighted that the European Commission has confirmed our position of the UK’s leading cultural and creative city.
“Glasgow is a city full of energy, enthusiasm, passion and creativity full of artists, designers, makers or creators and innovators. We have world-class museums and galleries, stunning architecture and history, and nowhere better to enjoy a gig as a UNESCO City of Music.
“However, our openness, tolerance and trust have been named the best in Europe, confirming what we already know, that our people are making Glasgow the best city in the world.” Glasgow is home to over 100 cultural organizations and five of the six national performing arts companies that are internationally renowned in Scotland.
The council claims that every year more people are visiting museums in Glasgow than in any other UK city outside London. Over the past few years, eight Turner Prize winners have hailed, trained, or worked out of city.
