Hurley accompanied her boyfriend to the Four Weddings and a Funeral premiere
The 54-year-old actress stole the red carpet show and sent photographers into a frenzy after wearing the glamorous black Versace gown that was held back in 1994 by oversized gold safety pins.
He had accompanied Grant, her then-boyfriend, to the Four Weddings premiere and a funeral that catapulted him into a stardom.
Grant states the designer gown caused him at the time to raise his eyebrows ‘a fraction’
Grant, 59, has now told a BBC documentary that they refused as they had not heard of her when Hurley called up fashion houses asking if she could borrow an outfit for the occasion.
He said: “There was a big premiere and someone told us – we knew nothing then, me and Elizabeth, about how you sort of cope with those things – someone said: ‘Oh you can borrow things from top designers.’
“Poor Elizabeth rang some of the top designers and they all said: ‘ No, who are you? ‘ or ‘ No, we don’t lend anything to you. ‘
“Then Versace said: ‘ Hey,we will lend you a dress’, ‘ and they just sent one round which is that one with the safety pins. So she shoved it on and I raised my eyebrows a fraction and we set off.”
After being infamously caught with a Hollywood prostitute, the couple split up in 2000.
Four Weddings scriptwriter Richard Curtis was among those appearing on Grant’s film career in the program.
In the film that made his name, he revealed Grant was almost not cast.
Curtis, whose other hits include Notting Hill, Love Actually and Bridget Jones’s Diary, said: “We had auditioned about 60 people for the leading role and none of them were funny. I had such a prejudice against him because he was so posh and so handsome, and I thought that someone that handsome wouldn’t be having that much trouble with girls.”
