For their last 17 home Premier League matches versus Manchester City, Liverpool are victorious
The confidence and self-confidence of Liverpool was gaining alarming momentum throughout the incredible rejuvenation of manager Jürgen Klopp, but the triumph of Sunday over Manchester City’s reigning Premier League champions may be just the moment they started to feel invincible.
When Liverpool last had the chance to overcome City, when January’s win at Etihad Stadium could have earned them a 10-point lead at the top of the table, they stumbled into a defeat that cost them the title in the final reckoning.
It was the day when Liverpool were able to make the statement loud and clear that they are not in the mood to be refused, and that their search for a title will not stretch beyond 30 years.
And this time there was no mistake as a 3-1 victory took them eight points off Leicester City and Chelsea and, perhaps more importantly, nine points off the hand of Pep Guardiola.
It was a match that lived up to its billing, full of value, controversy and incident with the champions playing their full part, but at the key moment in their search of that elusive title, Liverpool must know this result will come to be seen.
Nothing is going to be taken for granted-but this is now the winning tag for Liverpool.
Despite their style, emphasis, and current advantage, if the Reds don’t win it this season, they’ll never forgive themselves. Sure, it’s November now, but only one team can deny Liverpool from here: themselves.
