As part of its wider efforts to make political discussion more transparent, Twitter announced this week a new version of its profile labels for election candidates that will better identify who they are and where they will be in the 2020 U.S. election.
Twitter launched the candidate labels in 2018 for the first time, ahead of the mid-term US, with a more condensed version showcasing campaign activity.
The new labels will contain additional information-as Twitter explained:
“Starting this week, we’ll start identifying candidates who qualify for the primary ballot for US House, US Senate, and Gubernatorial races with a verified badge. Twitter is partnering with Ballotpedia, a civic nonprofit organization that publishes nonpartisan information on federal, state, and local politics, to help identify the campaign Twitter accounts of candidates once they qualify for the general election ballot for an applicable office.”
Twitter says its candidate labels have been well received in 2018 and have played a prominent role in the conversation about elections:
“People on Twitter saw Labeled accounts over 100 million times a day in the week before Election Day, and 13 percent of U.S. election conversation on Twitter included a Tweet with an Election Label.”
The new variation will build on that transparency and with the role of social media in the election race under intense scrutiny, it makes sense for Twitter to try, wherever possible, to strengthen its political ad tools.
The new labels will start appearing on this week’s candidate accounts.
